  • Samuel Martin

    Policy development expert

    Managing Director

    A partner of Marge since 2017, Samuel Martin has more than 17 years of professional experience in promoting renewable energy, energy access and energy efficiency. As a specialist in rural electrification and wood energy, particularly in policy development, he has worked on 3 continents (Africa, Asia and South America) for consulting firms, NGOs, research centers and the United Nations. In this context, he prepared and managed the implementation of projects aiming at improving energy access for the poor. In recent years he has also been actively involved in energy efficiency projects in the industrial sector, especially in the tea sector. Samuel has lived in developing countries in Asia and Africa since 2003 and is currently based in Malawi.
    Master in Mechanical Engineering (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne) and Specialisation Certificate in Technology and Sustainable Development (Indian Institute of Technology in Madras - IITM).

  • Maurice PIGAHT

    Project development Expert

    Senior Consultant

    Maurice Pigaht joined MARGE in 2009 and is a partner since 2013. He is a consultant on renewable energy sector promotion in developing economies. His work focuses on project development, energy sector policy, project finance advisory, energy business development and public-private partnership schemes. Maurice holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering (MEng) and Management (MBA) and has worked on technical, financial, strategic and policy issues surrounding renewable energy projects. He has worked in Madagascar, Rwanda, the DR Congo, South Africa, Germany, Burkina Faso, Afghanistan, Namibia, Senegal, Tanzania, Burundi and Mozambique. With over 15 years of professional experience in the solar PV, hydropower, and bioenergy sectors, he has developed, implemented and evaluated energy projects for GIZ, the EU, the World Bank, BTC, private sector clients and national governments.
    Masters in Mechanical Engineering (MEng) from Imperial College, London. Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Open University, UK.

  • Marina BRUTINEL


    Director of Research

    Marina has worked with MARGE since 2009 and has been a partner since 2013. She is socio-economist, specialised in energy access and sustainable development issues. Her experience ranges from project evaluation and development to economic and socioeconomic analysis. She has worked in Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, RDC, Rwanda), Latin America (El Salvador, Haïti, Costa Rica) and Asia (Cambodia). She has recently spent several years developing and implementing the Global Survey Program for the World Bank to assess the energy access under the Multi-Tier Framework (MTF) approach.
    Masters in Economics of Sustainable development, Université d’Auvergne (France) and in Political Science, University of Bath (UK). Degree in Business and Economics, ESSCA (France). 

  • Andrea Ranzanici

    Mini-grid and business development expert 

    Director of Operations

    Andrea is an engineer and MBA-holder specialised in the field of rural electrification, particularly through solar and hydro mini-grids. He is partner of MARGE since 2016. His skills include the identification, development and management of rural electrification projects in collaboration with the public and private sector, as well as providing technical assistance to policies in the field of energy access.
    MBA Renewables (Beuth University/RENAC), European Joint Master in Management and Engineering of Energy and Environment (ME3) from UPM Madrid (Spain), EMN Nantes (France) and KTH Stockholm (Sweden). 

  • Nicolas Livache




    Rural electrification expert

    Nicolas has 7 years of professional experience in rural electrification, mainly in Madagascar, but also in other Sub-Saharan African countries. His skills range from technical, financial and social management of projects, to the identification, designing, coordination and evaluation of projects. His experience covers both mini-grids’ design (technical, financial, social, organizational, environmental, etc.) as well as operationalization (construction, distribution, sale). Nicolas started working for MARGE in 2017 as an associated expert and definitively joined the team beginning of 2020.
    Master 2 in international cooperation and development, Master 1 and 2 in Renewable Energies (University of Montpellier 1), Degree in Energetics (University of South Brittany), DUT Thermal and Energy Engineering (IUT of Nantes).

  • Robert Jan VAN DER PLAS

    Energy economist

    Senior Advisor

    Robert van der Plas was the Managing Director of MARGE from 2013 to 2018 and remains a senior partner and shareholder. Since joining MARGE in 2001 after 16 years at the World Bank, he has designed, supervised, evaluated, and managed numerous energy efficiency or energy access projects and programs throughout Africa and Asia. His experience of over 30 years includes promoting public private partnerships, developing markets, and the sustainable use and supply of renewable energy including wood fuels. He has worked in many developing countries in Africa & Oceania, Asia & Pacific, Latin and Central America.
    Graduate of Twente University in the Netherlands (Applied Physics, Development Studies).


    Administrative and financial manager

    Claire joined MARGE in 2013. She manages MARGE activities: contracting, daily administration, finance, accounting, internal and external communication... She also assists the team everyday in tender prospection and preparation, logistics, background studies, etc. She has more than 17 years of experience in company administration and management.
    Master degree “Cultural development strategy” in Avignon University (France). Graduated from Political Sciences, Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Toulouse (France).
